Sadly left our motel in Hobart for the trip to Bruny Island and then on the Huonville. Just a 30 minute drive down to Kettering and on the ferry to Bruny Island. The clouds were low and heavy and it looked like it might just rain at any moment, we did persevere and made it through the day without getting wet.
First priority was to find a coffee, bit scarce around here!! Drove through Great Bay....the town, not the water, and got to The Neck coffeeless. This is a sliver of land with lake one side and ocean the other and sort of divides the Island between north and south. Pam and I climbed to the top, Noelene and Denise went along the boardwalk to the beach. Great view from the top and a couple of hundred photos will prove my point.
Driving south through Allonah to Lunawanna where we found a very respectable coffee shop. Pam went up to order coffee and found a curried scallop pie on the menu and ordered me one, mainly because it was after 11am so it was technically lunch time. Delicious. The others had some cake and muffin.
Rejuvenated we headed towards the lighthouse and the southern tip of the island. There's about 25 kilometres of dirt road and after a shower of rain overnight we collected a bit of dirt on the car. Wandered around the lighthouse, took a photo or two and decided to head back to the ferry. It's about an hours drive through a twisting and turning road, with huge trees and heavy undergrowth along the side. Plenty ocean views and lots of roadkill along the way.
Stopped at the Lunawanna cafe on the way back so the girls could have a late lunch.
Ferry back to Kettering and we went the tourist route down the peninsula that separates the Huon Valley estuary from the D'Entrecasteaux Channel. Beautiful views of the Huon Valley and through a range of hippy villages and expensive holiday homes; orchards and fruit growing regions. Arrived at Huonville at about 4.30, just in time to light the cosy wood fire and open a beer and a wine.
Queensland of course won the State of Origin and everyone went to bed happy (even me, who went to bed before it even started because I was so confident of the result!!)

| Looks like we brought half of Bruny Island home with us? |
We stayed on Bruny for a couple of days at Alonnah, great place. Hope the weather improves but you still have to do what you’ve got to do despite it hey!
ReplyDeleteBruny is a very interesting spot, as with most of Tasmania - the trees are SO big, they really dwarf us in our little car!!
